The body is elongated, cylindrical, and can reach more than 50 cm in length. Cyan, with three longitudinal rows of black patches, with two black longitudinal bands from behind the eyes to the cheek. The mouth is large, and the cusps, dorsal and anal fins are all extended like ridges. There is a wide upper gill cavity above the pharynx, which can breathe air. Fierce, young fish feed on copepods and cladocerans and inhabit the bottom of freshwater. Small fish feed on aquatic insects and small shrimps and other small fish. When it grows to more than 8 cm, it will prey on other fish, so it is one of the harmful fish in freshwater aquaculture.
