Evergreen trees with upright trunks up to 10m. Single leaves are leathery, alternate, elliptical or obovate. Panicles, flowering branch racemes sort. The fruit consists of an enlarged fleshy receptacle (fruit pear , that is, false fruit) and a nut (seed, that is true fruit) growing on the receptacle.
